Basic White Markings |
---|
Basic White Markings consist of your normal face and leg markings that can be found in Horse Trader Horses, Created Goldbloods, and most user-bred horses. These white markings are inherited like any other marking, although they do not have a specific gene on the genetics page. Your horse can only have basic white markings if their parents also have basic white markings, which may be covered by other markings such as paint markings or special face markings found below. |
Paint Marking Genes | Sabino | This gene is responsible for the sabino paint pattern. Sabino markings are usually lace-like with a softer, speckled appearance. This marking is dominant, so it shows whether it is homozygous or heterozygous. It is dominant over Overo and Tobiano markings. There are 20 regular sabino patterns and 5 modifier versions (M1) which come from Glistening Snowballs. A horse with a modified sabino gene is called a Snowball. | Overo | Overo markings can take a variety of patterns from frame (body) markings to splash/minimal (legs/face) markings. These are usually rougher edged than Sabino markings. This is dominant, so will show whether homozygous or heterozygous. Sabino will override this marking! Overo will override Tobiano. In addition, FFH does NOT have a lethal white overo trait. There are 20 regular overo patterns and 5 modifier versions (M1) which come from Spilled Paint. A horse with a modified overo gene is called a Splash. | Tobiano | Tobiano markings tend to have soft, rounded edges. They are heavier across the barrel of the horse and usually cross the back. It is not uncommon for tobiano horses to have solid or minimally marked legs and/or faces. This is dominant, so will show whether homozygous or heterozygous. Both Sabino and Overo will override this marking! There are 20 regular tobiano patterns and 5 modifier (M1) patterns which come from Rusty Figurine. A horse with a modified tobiano gene is called a Scrappy. | Tovero | Tovero is a mix of Tobiano and Overo colorations. Tovero will always show up on horses with homozygous Tobiano and Overo and may also show up on horses that are heterozygous (or higher) for both markings. |

Appaloosa Marking Genes | Appaloosa | The Appaloosa gene on FFH works the same as the Leopard gene in real life. This gene determines the type of pattern an Appaloosa horse shows. Horses with a heterozygous gene show a spotty marking while horses with a homozygous gene show solid markings. Horses with recessive Appaloosa do not show any breed characteristics and are considered 'solid bred'. | Blanket | Blanket modifier (M1) acts upon the Appaloosa gene the same as the PATN1 gene in real life. It determines the extent of body covered by white pattern. Horses with homozygous Blanket may be nearly solid white while horses with heterozygous may only show a a little white, usually limited to their hindquarters. Horses with recessive Blanket show varnish roan characteristics. | Mottling | The Mottling gene determines how much mottling a horse shows. Horses with a Low gene show minimal mottling, determined by their marking, while horses with Moderate or Strong genes will show much stronger mottling characteristics. | Hoof Stripes | The Hoof Stripes gene determines how much hoof striping a horse shows. Horses with a Low gene show minimal striping while horses with Moderate or Strong genes will show much stronger striping characteristics. | Face Marking Genes | Masque | Masque is a special type of face marking that comes in several variations. These markings are obtained using the Courtly Masque item. Recessive horses will never pass the gene, while horses who are heterozygous or homozygous will accordingly have a chance of displaying the marking. | Badger | Badger is a special type of face marking based on the realistic badger face markings. It comes in 7 variations. These markings are obtained using the Badger Bait item. Recessive horses will never pass the gene, while horses who are heterozygous or homozygous will accordingly have a chance of displaying the marking. | Mosaic | Mosaic is a special type of face marking that involves speckling and spots within the white marking. It comes in 7 variations. These markings are obtained using the Celestial Lantern item. Recessive horses will never pass the gene, while horses who are heterozygous or homozygous will accordingly have a chance of displaying the marking. | Mustache | Mustache is a special type of face marking which creates white snips resembling a milk mustache. It can be added to a horse using the Santa's Snack item. Recessive horses will never pass the gene, while horses who are heterozygous or homozygous will accordingly have a chance of displaying the marking. | Common Marking Genes | Birdcatcher | This gene gives horses white spots and speckles on their coat. It can vary from minimal spotting, to heavy spotting. This marking can be given using the Dreamcatcher item. This gene is semi-dominant. A horse who is homozygous will always show the marking, while a horse who is heterozygous only has a chance to show it. | Rabicano | This gene causes roaning and flecking around the flank or barrel of the horse. It can be very minimal to fairly extreme. This marking can be given using the Pixie Powder item. This gene is semi-dominant. A horse who is homozygous will always show the marking, while a horse who is heterozygous only has a chance to show it. | BendOr | This gene causes dark spots to appear on the horse. They can vary in size and are usually softer looking than the white Birdcatcher markings. This marking can be given using the Lump Of Coal item. This gene is semi-dominant. A horse who is homozygous will always show the marking, while a horse who is heterozygous only has a chance to show it. | Frosting | Frosting is a marking that adds white streaks or highlights in a horse's mane and tail, often referred to as "frosting". It can be added to a horse by using the Frost In item. A horse who is homozygous will always show the marking, while a horse who is heterozygous only has a chance to show it. | Silly Stocking | Silly Stocking is a marking that allows you to have higher "socks" on a horse's leg markings. It can be added to a horse by using the Silly Stocking item. Horses who have this marking have a chance to pass it on and also have a higher chance of passing on more white leg markings in general. (Including normal stockings, half stockings, and tall socks.) | Blue Eyes | This gene causes varied eye shades on horses. The two most common colors are shades of blue, but less commonly it can create hazel and violet eyes. It is not related to the blue eyes caused by some paint patterns. It can be added to a horse by using the Skyscope item. A horse who is homozygous will always show the marking, while a horse who is heterozygous only has a chance to show it. | Rare Marking Genes | Brindle | This gene causes white striping (brindling) to appear on the body of the horse. It can vary in intensity from subtle to quite homozygous. It can be added to a horse by using the Candy Cane item. This gene is recessive. It will ONLY show when a horse is homozygous, but heterozygous horses can pass it to their offspring. | Streak | This gene causes striping to appear on the body of the horse. It is very similar to brindle but in a darker color. It can vary in intensity from subtle to quite homozygous. It can be added to a horse by using the Sketching Stix item. This gene is recessive. It will ONLY show when a horse is homozygous, but heterozygous horses can pass it to their offspring. | Lace | This gene causes white cobwebbing, also known as lace, to appear on the back or body of the horse. It can vary from faint white lacy marks across the dorsal zone to bolder white marks that resemble reverse dappling. It can be added to a horse by using the Amore Charm item. This gene is recessive. It will ONLY show when a horse is homozygous, but heterozygous horses can pass it to their offspring. | Pangare |
This is a marking that will show up on most colors excluding double dilute Cream, Black, Blue Roan, and Silver variants of either of those. There are 8 unique Pangare markings, including four strengths (minimal, moderate, strong, extreme) and two different colorations (light and dark) of each strength. It can be added using the Primordial Relic item. This gene is semi-dominant. A horse who is homozygous will always show the marking, while a horse who is heterozygous only has a chance to show it. |
Sooty | This gene gives a dark dappled shading appearance to any horse. It can be added to a horse by using the Mud Bath item. This gene is semi-dominant. A horse who is homozygous will always show the marking, while a horse who is heterozygous only has a chance to show it. | Aurora | Aurora is a marking that adds a light pearly, iridescent, sheen to most of a horse's coat. Horses only show the marking if they carry a homozygous gene. | Abyss | Abyss is a marking that adds a dark inky, iridescent, sheen to most of a horse's coat. Horses only show the marking if they carry a homozygous gene. | Gold Marking Genes | Glosting | This is a special modifier (M1) of the Frosting gene and adds golden streaks or highlights to a horses mane and tail. It can be added to a horse by using the Gold In item. | Gold Dust | Gold Dust is a marking that can be given to a horse with the Gold Dust item. Depending on the marking chosen, it can add a golden sheen or golden spots to a horse. |
